22 How to relax: entertainment venues and stress relief

The first half covers entertainment venues: which spending is a waste, and where the emergency exits are. The measure is money and personal liberty. The second half covers how to relieve stress. The measure is energy and overall mortality. The figures from both halves are not converted into each other. Items 11 and 12 at the end of the section cover how to avoid harm while out: do not soak in a hot spring or take a sauna after drinking, and wear a helmet when skiing or cycling. The measure there is mortality. Section 3 already covers what to do first when your mood is low. This section gives more specific methods.

Items in this section (12)
  1. 22.1 Check where the emergency exits are before entering a KTV, bar, or escape room; if they’re locked or blocked, pick another venue
  2. 22.2 Ask for the price list before you order; entertainment venues must show prices, and do not accept "play first, settle later"
  3. 22.3 If someone at the venue hands you "something," leave at once. Sheltering drug use and supplying drugs are not "helping a friend"
  4. 22.4 Do not eat candy or snacks from strangers, do not drink a beverage that has left your sight, and do not take a vape cartridge someone hands you
  5. 22.5 Do not go to scripted murder-mystery games (剧本杀, jubensha) or escape rooms opened in a residential building or on basement level 2 or below
  6. 22.6 When your mood is so low it reaches depression, go for a walk or a run: the anti-depression effect size is proportional to the intensity
  7. 22.7 When anxiety is bad enough to disrupt daily life, a mindfulness-based stress reduction course is not worse than a commonly used anti-anxiety drug
  8. 22.8 To ease off on the spot, use 5 minutes of "cyclic sighing": 2 inhales, then a long exhale
  9. 22.9 Treat “regular social contact” as a health expense — don’t wait until you’re feeling down to reach out

By the rules, while an entertainment venue is open, evacuation routes and emergency exits must stay clear. They must not be blocked, locked, or have objects placed in the way, and the direction signs must not be covered. Internet cafés likewise must not have their doors sealed or their windows locked. Failing to do this is illegal, and you can report it. If the private room is underground, has only one exit, or the corridor is piled with clutter, go to another place.

Cost

No cost at all. Just take 10 seconds to look around when you enter.

Benefit

Ensuring unobstructed evacuation routes and exits is a mandatory legal obligation for venue operators. Noncompliance is illegal and reportable. The exact wording of the regulation reads: “During operating hours, entertainment venues must guarantee that evacuation routes and emergency exits remain unblocked; they cannot be sealed, locked, or fitted with barriers that hinder evacuation.” It also stipulates that “clear signage must be posted at all evacuation routes and exits, and such signage must not be obscured or covered.” Internet cafés are similarly required not to “block or lock doors, windows, evacuation routes, or exits during business hours” and to “ban open flames and smoking.”

Notes

If any of the following issues are present, pick another venue: private rooms located underground, only one exit available, corridors filled with clutter, or nonfunctional emergency exit lights. In the event of a fire at such venues, thick smoke, narrow corridors, and large crowds of intoxicated patrons make escape extremely difficult — you may have only seconds to get out. Per regulations, the contact number for filing complaints must be clearly displayed on warning signs throughout the venue.

By the rules, an entertainment venue that sells services or goods must show prices clearly, and must take the initiative to show you the price list. So-called sky-high drink charges usually turn up when nobody has seen a price list and the bill is settled afterward from a spoken quote. When you go into the private room, ask for the list and photograph it. After you order, ask for a confirmed list. If the bill is disputed, call 12315 on the spot.

Cost

No cost. Ask once for the list. The hard part is asking the price in front of other people. It feels a bit awkward.

Benefit

The regulation says: "When an entertainment venue provides entertainment services or sells goods, it shall mark prices clearly and show consumers the price list; it shall not force or deceive consumers into accepting services or buying goods." Violations of price laws and regulations are punished by the relevant department according to law. Disputes over so-called sky-high drinks commonly look like this: no price list was shown, and the bill was settled afterward from a spoken quote. That sentence is the author's experience. No official statistics were found.

Notes

What to do: when you enter the private room, ask for 1 price list, on paper or on a screen, and photograph it as soon as you have it. After you order, ask for 1 confirmed list. For a "signature cocktail" or a fruit platter the staff recommend, ask the price before you order, every time. If the bill is disputed, call 12315 on the spot. Do not pay first and seek a remedy afterward. Once you have paid, proving your case is much harder.

An entertainment venue must not sell drugs, must not supply drugs, and must not let people use drugs inside. A violation means a business suspension for rectification of 3 to 6 months, and in a serious case the license is revoked. Letting someone "use a bit" in a private room you booked, or at your home, can be the crime of providing a place for others to use drugs. If someone pulls out an unknown powder, tablet, or vape cartridge and asks you to try it, leave on the spot.

Cost

No cost. Stand up and walk out. The hard part is leaving in front of a whole table of people.

Benefit

The regulation expressly forbids entertainment venues to "sell or supply drugs, or organize, force, abet, lure, deceive, or provide a place for others to ingest or inject drugs." Staff must not use drugs, and must not provide conditions for customers to do any of the above. For a violation, the public security department confiscates illegal gains and illegal property and orders a business suspension for rectification of 3 to 6 months. In a serious case the entertainment business license is revoked. The regulation also requires the venue to hang warning signs against drugs, gambling, and prostitution in a conspicuous place in the hall and in the private rooms, and to state the report phone number on them. On the personal side, the Criminal Law provides: "Whoever provides a place for another person to ingest or inject drugs shall be sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment of not more than 3 years, criminal detention, or public surveillance, and shall also be fined." A judicial interpretation of the Supreme People's Court lists the situations that count as the crime, including providing a place for several people at 1 time, doing so repeatedly within 2 years, providing a place for a minor, and doing so for profit. If it does not amount to a crime, the Public Security Administration Punishments Law provides detention of 10 to 15 days, and a fine of up to 3000 yuan may be added. In a lighter case, detention of up to 5 days, or a fine of up to 1000 yuan. Ingesting or injecting drugs yourself likewise brings detention of 10 to 15 days, and a fine of up to 3000 yuan may be added.

Notes

As soon as someone produces an unknown powder, tablet, or vape cartridge and asks you to "try it," leave on the spot. Do not stay to watch. The risk you carry personally is heavier than the venue's. Using drugs yourself is itself subject to a public-security penalty. Letting a friend "use a bit here" in a private room you booked, or at your own home, can be the crime of providing a place for others to use drugs.

Today's drugs do not look like drugs. A "high" e-cigarette mixed with synthetic cannabinoids looks much like an ordinary e-cigarette, and some people specifically hand them out to try in bars, KTVs, and hotels. Tricking someone into using them brings detention of 10 to 15 days plus a fine. Using them yourself also brings detention. Someone who was tricked into using them can get a lighter penalty, or none. If a drink has left your sight, get a new drink.

Cost

No cost. Do not take anything that is handed to you. If your own cup has left your sight, get a new drink.

Benefit

Today's drugs do not look like drugs. Synthetic cannabinoids have been controlled as a whole class since July 1, 2021, and the whole class is regulated as drugs. Some people mix them into vape liquid and make "high" e-cigarettes. In a case reported by the Supreme People's Procuratorate, investigators described this liquid as something that "can be turned into all kinds of colors and flavors by adding food coloring" and that is "basically the same in appearance as an ordinary e-cigarette." Sellers gather people in bars, KTVs, and hotels to push it and induce others to use it. In that report, among the drug-use cases handled locally that year, minor users were nearly 40%. Etomidate has been listed in the catalog of category II psychotropic substances since October 1, 2023. Tricking someone into using drugs is itself 1 grade of illegality. Whoever lures, abets, deceives, or forces another person to ingest or inject drugs is detained for 10 to 15 days and fined 1000 to 5000 yuan. If it constitutes a crime, the sentence is up to 3 years; if the circumstances are serious, 3 to 7 years; if force is used, 3 to 10 years; and if the target is a minor, the penalty is heavier. Whoever ingests or injects drugs is detained for 10 to 15 days and may be fined up to 3000 yuan. In a lighter case, detention of up to 5 days or a fine of up to 1000 yuan. If the person used drugs only because they were coerced or tricked, the same law provides "a lighter penalty, a mitigated penalty, or no penalty." They may also be ordered at the same time not to enter entertainment venues for 6 months to 1 year. If addicted, they are ordered into community drug rehabilitation for 3 years. If they refuse community rehabilitation, or use again during rehabilitation, they are sent to compulsory isolated detoxification for 2 years, which can be extended by up to another 1 year (nationwide, the Public Security Administration Punishments Law, from January 2026).

Notes

This is not only entertainment venues. The same applies at a school gate, at a gathering of friends, and on a long-distance bus. It is the same whether what is offered is candy, a drink, or a vape cartridge. Being drugged is often followed by robbery, sexual assault, and extortion. There are no published official statistics on that part. It is a judgment from experience. If a drink has left your sight, getting a new drink is much simpler than trying to pursue it afterward. For what to do when someone in the venue produces an unknown powder, tablet, or cartridge, see item 3 of this section. For carrying things for someone else, see section 8, item 29.

A 2022 notice from 5 departments states that a script-entertainment venue must not open inside a residential building, and must not open below basement level 1. These sites are often dim, with narrow passages. Some are fitted out with flammable materials, and the evacuation routes are locked or blocked, so they are hard to get out of in a fire. Before you book, look at the address and the floor on the review page. If it does not comply, pick another place.

Cost

No cost. Before you book, ask which floor the address is on.

Benefit

A dedicated 2022 notice from 5 departments is specific: "Script-entertainment business premises must not be located inside residential buildings, below basement level 1 of a building (not including basement level 1), or in similar places." The notice also requires venues to carry out the Work Safety Law and the Fire Protection Law, and to "routinely identify, inspect, and correct their own fire risks, and improve the ability to organize evacuation and escape in an emergency and to fight a fire in its early stage." The same notice also requires an age notice on the script. If a scenario is not suitable for minors, minors must not be allowed in. Except on statutory holidays, rest days, and winter and summer school breaks, script-entertainment activities must not be provided to minors. At the end of 2021, the fire service and the culture and tourism departments of Qingpu District, Shanghai, inspected 13 venues of this kind. The bulletin said these venues are usually dim, with narrow passages, and that the problems included decoration with flammable materials and evacuation routes that were locked or occupied.

Notes

The Qingpu bulletin also said that some businesses, for the atmosphere, make the rooms into a maze and hide the evacuation signs and the emergency lights. Once something happens, it is not easy to find an exit straight away. Before you book, the review page already shows the floor, and whether it is a residential building. If it does not comply, switch to another place.

22.6 When your mood is so low it reaches depression, go for a walk or a run: the anti-depression effect size is proportional to the intensity

  • Money No cost
  • Time Hours
  • Willpower A lot
  • Benefit Big
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: OrdinaryEvidence ADisputed
In plain terms

For people with severe depression who exercise, brisk walking or jogging shows the clearest improvement. Next are yoga, strength training, and tai chi or qigong, and the gap among them is small. The higher the intensity, the better the effect. Strength training and yoga are the easiest to keep up. The quality of the evidence on this is on the low side. What can be said for sure is that moving is better than not moving. Pick the kind you can stick with.

Cost

Free. Each session takes about half an hour. The hard part is that when you’re in a bad mood, moving feels the last thing you want to do — you have to push yourself to get started.

Benefit

This result comes from combining data across 218 randomized controlled trials split into two groups, covering 495 treatment arms and 14,170 participants who met clinical criteria for major depression. A Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to compare all these different forms of exercise against each other, using standard care or placebo pills as control groups. The effect size is expressed as Hedges’ g; the more negative this value, the greater the symptom improvement. For brisk walking or jogging, the value was −0.62 (95% confidence interval: −0.80 to −0.45, meaning the true value falls roughly in this range). Yoga came in at −0.55 (−0.73 to −0.36), strength training at −0.49 (−0.69 to −0.29), mixed aerobic exercise at −0.43 (−0.61 to −0.24), and tai chi/Qigong at −0.42 (−0.65 to −0.21). The original paper states that “the effect of exercise is directly proportional to the prescribed intensity”, meaning higher intensity yields better results. Strength training and yoga also score highest on acceptability, making them the easiest to keep up.

Notes

Disputed: This finding is somewhat controversial. The authors themselves point out that only one out of the 218 studies met sufficiently rigorous design standards to rule out major bias. Using standard grading criteria, brisk walking and jogging only qualify for a “low” confidence rating, while all other exercise types receive “very low” ratings. Since participants know they’re taking part in an exercise program, placebo effects inevitably play a role, skewing results upward. Still, the direction of the conclusion is usable: any physical activity is better than none, intensity should be kept reasonably high, and you should choose a type you can realistically stick with over time. This section expands on the earlier advice in Section 3 to “get moving when feeling down”, but it is by no means a substitute for professional medical treatment after a proper diagnosis.

22.7 When anxiety is bad enough to disrupt daily life, a mindfulness-based stress reduction course is not worse than a commonly used anti-anxiety drug

  • Money Low
  • Time Daily
  • Willpower A lot
  • Benefit Big
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: OrdinaryEvidence A
In plain terms

For people diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course improves symptoms almost as much as the anti-anxiety drug escitalopram. Nearly 80% of the people on the drug had an adverse reaction, and some quit because of it. About 15% of the people in the course had an adverse reaction, and nobody quit. The course has to be a standardized 8-week course. A random meditation app does not count.

Cost

Signing up for the course costs a bit of money. The course runs 8 weeks, with 1 class a week, plus daily practice at home. The hard part is practicing every day for 8 weeks straight.

Benefit

This trial was done at 3 urban academic medical centers in the United States, to see whether the course would be worse than the drug (a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial). 276 adults diagnosed with an anxiety disorder were split at random 1:1. The course group took an 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course. The drug group took escitalopram (a flexible dose of 10 to 20 mg). 208 people finished the whole course. At the end, scored on the anxiety severity rating given by a clinician (the Clinical Global Impression–Severity scale), the mindfulness group fell by 1.35 and the drug group fell by 1.43. The difference between the groups was −0.07 (95% CI −0.38 to 0.23, meaning the true gap falls roughly in this range; P=0.65, meaning this gap cannot be told apart from no difference). The lower end of this range did not cross the line drawn in advance for "not counting as worse" (non-inferiority margin −0.495). Side effects differed a lot: 78.6% of the drug group had at least 1 trial-related adverse reaction, and 10 people quit because of it. The mindfulness group was 15.4%, and nobody quit because of it.

Notes

The trial used a standardized 8-week mindfulness-based stress reduction course (MBSR). A random meditation app cannot be treated as the same thing. It applies to people who already meet the diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder. If you should see a doctor, see a doctor. If you have been putting off treatment because you worry about drug side effects, there is another option with evidence of similar strength.

22.8 To ease off on the spot, use 5 minutes of "cyclic sighing": 2 inhales, then a long exhale

  • Money No cost
  • Time Minutes
  • Willpower None
  • Benefit Medium
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: HighEvidence B
In plain terms

Do a 5-minute breathing exercise every day and keep it up for a month, and both mood and slower breathing improve more than with mindfulness meditation of the same length. Among the breathing methods, "cyclic sighing," which lengthens the exhale, works best. The method is to inhale through the nose, take 1 more small breath to fill the lungs, then breathe out slowly through the mouth until empty. This is only 1 trial, and whether it helped is reported by the person themselves, but it costs nothing.

Cost

No cost. 5 minutes a day.

Benefit

This was a controlled trial done at home, with people assigned at random, comparing 3 breathing exercises of 5 minutes a day with mindfulness meditation of the same length, for 1 month. The 3 breathing methods are cyclic sighing (emphasis on a longer exhale), box breathing (inhale, hold, and exhale of equal length), and cyclic hyperventilation with breath holds (long inhale, short exhale). Putting each person's sessions together (a mixed-effects model), the breathing exercises all beat mindfulness meditation, especially cyclic sighing, which is built on the exhale. It was better both for mood (P<0.05, meaning this difference does not look like a chance hit) and for a drop in breathing rate (P<0.05).

Notes

The method is to inhale once through the nose, briefly add 1 more small breath to fill the lungs, then breathe the air out slowly and at length through the mouth, and repeat for 5 minutes. There is only this 1 trial. It was done at home, whether it helped was reported by the person on a questionnaire, and the number of people was not large. The effect is only slightly better than meditation. It does not amount to solving the problem. But it costs nothing, takes only 5 minutes, and can be done anytime, anywhere, so the return for the cost is high.

22.9 Treat “regular social contact” as a health expense — don’t wait until you’re feeling down to reach out

  • Money Low

Value: OrdinaryEvidence ADisputed

People who rarely spend time with others have about a 30% higher chance of dying over the same period. For people who feel lonely it is about 1/4 higher, and for people who live alone about 30% higher. This is more marked in people 65 or younger. All of this comes from following people over time. It may also be that people already in poor health are more likely to live alone.

Cost

It requires some money and time to arrange meetups. The hard part is making the effort to schedule them even when you’re in a good mood.

Benefit

This pools 70 studies that recorded people's situation first and then followed them forward (a meta-analysis), with 3.4 million participants followed for an average of 7 years. Social isolation, loneliness, and living alone all correlate with higher mortality. After adjusting for age and health status, the weighted average odds ratios were: 1.29 for social isolation, 1.26 for loneliness, and 1.32 for living alone. Converted, the chance of dying over the same period was about 30%, about 1/4, and about 30% higher respectively. The effects are comparable across all three factors and are stronger among people 65 or younger than among older people.

Notes

Disputed: This topic remains debated. These findings are purely correlational; no randomized controlled trials have been conducted to prove cause and effect. It’s also true that people with poorer health are more likely to live alone and to socialize less. The authors argue that social relationships are as important to health as smoking or obesity, yet there’s no randomized evidence showing that increasing social contact actually lowers mortality. This point does not contradict Section 3’s advice to “cut back on draining relationships”; that section focuses on eliminating toxic connections, while this one stresses the value of maintaining those that replenish your energy.

22.10 Count nearby green space when choosing where to live, but do not expect "going to the park more" to extend your life

  • Money No cost
  • Time Minutes
  • Willpower None
  • Benefit Small
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: OrdinaryEvidence ADisputed
In plain terms

The better the greenery within 500 meters of where you live, the lower the chance of dying over the same period. Counted as each 0.1 rise in the vegetation index, that chance is about 4% lower. What was measured is the greenery around the home, not how often you go to a park. In a greener area, the people who live there tend to have more money, and the air is better too. So do not take this as going to the park will extend your life. When you choose a home, count the green space around it.

Cost

No cost. When you look at a home, glance at the greenery around it.

Benefit

This pools 9 studies that followed groups of people for years (a meta-analysis of cohort studies), covering 7 countries and 8,320,000 people. It looks at greenery within 500 meters of the home, measured by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI, a number that converts ground vegetation into a score). For each 0.1 increase in the index, the pooled risk ratio for overall mortality was 0.96 (95% CI 0.94–0.97). The chance of dying over the same period was about 4% lower, and the true value falls roughly between 3% lower and 6% lower. Of the 9 studies, 7 found that better greenery went with lower mortality, and the difference did not look like chance. The other 2 found no link.

Notes

Disputed. Results across the studies differ widely (I²=95%; the larger this number, the less they agree with each other). And what it measured is greenery around the place of residence, not how often you go to a park. People who live in a greener place also tend to be richer, to have better air, and to exercise more, and these cannot be separated from the greenery as to which of them is doing the work. Do not read it as "going to a park extends your life." The usable part is to count green space when choosing a home, and the cost is 0. For this NDVI number, bare ground and concrete are near 0, and dense vegetation is near 1. So 0.1 is roughly the difference of moving from a bare block to a block with rows of street trees.

22.11 After drinking, do not soak in a hot spring or take a sauna, and do not take a hot bath at home either

  • Money No cost
  • Time Minutes
  • Willpower Some
  • Benefit Medium
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: OrdinaryEvidence B
In plain terms

In Finland, half of the people who died in a sauna had been drinking. In Tokyo, about a quarter of the bathing deaths that were autopsied had a blood alcohol level that was not low, and in a set of bathtub-drowning records drunkenness was the most common trigger. Japanese officials list "do not take a bath after drinking" as a key point for preventing drowning. If a companion has drunk too much, do not let that person go in and soak alone.

Cost

No cost. If you have been drinking, go soak another day, and at home just take a simple shower. The hard part is that a hot spring or a sauna is often the next stop after a group meal. The whole table goes, and you have to say out loud that you are not going.

Benefit

Finland checked, case by case, the people who died in a sauna from 1990 to 2002, using police and forensic reports. Deaths of this kind are fewer than 2 per 100000 each year. The original text says "overall, 50% of the people were under the influence of alcohol." The authors say this alcohol risk is growing, and the focus of prevention is to drink less and not to leave a drunk person alone in the sauna. From 2009 to 2011, Tokyo forensic doctors handled 3289 deaths during bathing. Among the 550 that were autopsied, 140 had blood alcohol above 0.5 milligrams per milliliter, about 1/4. Another Tokyo autopsy series had 77 bathtub drownings. Among the factors that led to the drowning, drunkenness was the most common (25 cases), then heart disease (22 cases). A December 2025 notice from the Japan Consumer Affairs Agency says that in 2024, 7776 people in Japan drowned in a bathtub, of whom 7363 were aged 65 or older. The accident-prevention points say: do not take a bath right after a meal, after drinking, or after taking medicine. The Chinese embassy in Japan warns that "it is unwise to bathe after drinking," because "bathing after drinking can easily trigger an acute illness of the heart or the blood vessels." A public-education note from the Shaanxi health commission says that soaking in a hot spring after drinking, with the water that hot, dilates the blood vessels and can bring low blood pressure, low blood sugar, or even fainting.

Notes

The grade is set at B because these studies looked only at people who had died. Nobody has calculated how many of the people who soak after drinking come to harm, so it is not possible to say how many times higher the risk is. The benefit is set at "medium" by judgment: people who die in a sauna or a bathtub are not many to begin with, but among those who died, those who had been drinking account for 1/4 to 1/2. Most bathtub drownings in Japan are older people. A young person who has been drinking can come to harm in a sauna just the same. For the benefits of a usual bath, and the reminders on water temperature and how long to stay in, see section 2, item 36 (take a bath when you can). For how to look after a companion who is drunk, see section 13, item 46 (someone is drunk).

22.12 Wear a helmet when skiing, snowboarding, rollerblading, or mountain biking

  • Money Low
  • Time Minutes
  • Willpower None
  • Benefit Big
  • Measured in Lifespan
Value: HighEvidence A
In plain terms

When skiing or snowboarding, wearing a helmet makes the chance of a head injury in a fall or a collision about 1/3 lower, and for a child 13 or younger it makes that chance about 60% lower. When riding a bicycle, wearing a helmet makes the chance of a serious head injury about 70% lower, and makes the chance of a fatal head injury about 2/3 lower. Wearing a helmet did not make the neck easier to injure.

Cost

A helmet costs a few hundred yuan. Putting it on and fastening the strap takes a few seconds each time.

Benefit

The skiing and snowboarding figures come from a pooled analysis of 12 studies. Most of the studies compared people with a head injury to other people and looked at who was wearing a helmet (case-control). For people wearing a helmet, the odds ratio for a head injury was OR 0.65 (95% CI 0.55–0.79), about 35% lower. In the studies that included children 13 or younger, OR 0.41 (0.27–0.59), about 59% lower. For a neck injury, OR 0.89 (0.72–1.09), not higher. The bicycle figures come from 40 studies and more than 64,000 people who fell off a bike or were in a crash. Head injury OR 0.49 (0.42–0.57), about 51% lower. A serious head injury OR 0.31 (0.25–0.37), about 69% lower. A fatal head injury OR 0.35 (0.14–0.88), about 65% lower. A facial injury OR 0.67 (0.56–0.81), about 33% lower. A neck injury OR 0.96 (0.74–1.25), no link visible. The Beijing Municipal Bureau of Sports says that after Beijing's local standard for ski resorts was revised in 2017, a helmet is required to enter an advanced run.

Notes

These figures are the chance of a head injury after a fall or a collision. A helmet does not make you fall less often. No pooled study of the same kind was found for rollerblading or skateboarding. Those are carried over by analogy, because the way a fall hits the head is similar. The helmet should fit the head, the strap should be fastened tight, and a rented helmet should be tried on first. For wearing a helmet on a motorcycle or an e-bike, see section 1, item 2 (wear a helmet).
